• 1. Caroline Jane Le Grand (d. 1900); CD had accepted the dedication of an unidentified work of hers: Pilgrim Letters 3, pp. 266, 339.
• 2. Then in Queen’s County, Ireland (now Co. Laois).
• 3. The envelope clearly belongs to the letter of 9 October (Pilgrim Letters 3, p. 339): the postmarks would be stamped in London and Dublin.
