Will you come and dine with us on Monday next at 6 sharp? We have no party. Thackeray’s daughters2 are coming to see the girls that day, but otherwise we are en famille.

  • 1. Edward Frederick Smyth Pigott, journalist; proprietor of the Leader, 1852-8: see Pilgrim Letters 7, p. 571 & n. A close friend of Wilkie Collins, who represented him as Migott in “The Cruise of the Tomtit” (Household Words, 22 Dec 55, XII, 490), CD had got to know Pigott well during 1855. He had played Captain Ebsworth in CD’s production of The Frozen Deep, Jan 57 (photograph, Pilgrim Letters 8, frontispiece; playbill, Under the Management of Mr. Charles Dickens, ed. Robert Louis Brannan, 1966, p. 7).
