Mr Charles Dickens presents his compliments to Mr Montgomerie, and begs to thank him for his obliging letter.2 He has looked into the authorities again, and availed himself of Mr Montgomerie's correction.3

• 1. Hugh Edmonstone Montgomerie (1820-91), ship owner and insurance broker. He had worked in Montreal in the firm of Edmonstone, Allan and Co, before entering into business in London in 1849 with his partner, Alexander Greenhorne.
• 2. Montgomerie had written to CD, offering a correction to John Capper's article entitled "Underwriting", concerning the Society of Underwriters or Marine Insurers, commonly known as Lloyd's (Household Words 5 [4 Sept 1852]: 585-9).
• 3. The correction was printed as "Lloyd's List", in Household Words 6 (2 Oct 1852): 69-70; it altered the date of the earliest list in existence from 1745 to 1740.
