My Dear Sir

I have been visiting in the country, or I should have answered your note sooner.

I assure you that I feel under many obligations to you, and have to thank you for much kindness. I shall be glad to do so, in person, whenever you (and good fortune) give me the opportunity.

                        Faithfully Yours

                                    CHARLES DICKENS

Durancé George Esquire.

  • 1. John Durancé George (1815-51), Dental Surgeon at University College Hospital and Lecturer on dental surgery. Studied medicine at University College London 1835-7; qualified as MRCS in 1838. He became dentist to London society figures, including the Dowager Queen Adelaide. In 1848 George had sought CD's agreement to serve on an unidentified committee; see Pilgrim Letters 5, p. 246.
