            Mr Charles Dickens will thank Mr Beale to have the goodness to send a receipt.2

  • 1. James Beale, hosier and glover at 131 New Bond Street. CD had been buying from him since Jan 1841 (see Pilgrim Letters 3, p. 410n); his accounts show roughly annual payments from 1841 onward.
  • 2. CD’s account book shows a payment of £28.10s, made on 23 Mar 1846 (MS Messrs Coutts).
