Address: Miss Payne | North Inddersham2 | Mattishall | East Dereham
Date: PM Dereham 12 Aug 1849

  • 1. Possibly the "Miss Payne" who taught at Field Lane Ragged School. See To Miss Burdett Coutts, 26 Aug 1850, 13 Sept 1850, and 15 Sept 1850, in Pilgrim Letters 6, pp. 157, 167, 168. CD describes her as "always blowing a shrill set of spiritual Pan's pipes -- but she is earnest, though bitterly in want of sound teaching for the office of teacher" (13 Sept 1850).
  • 2. CD's incorrect rendering of "Tuddenham", a hamlet north of Mattishall.
