To RICHARD CREED,1 19 JULY 1842

Text from facsimile in Sotheby's online catalogue, June 2017.

Devonshire Terrace

Nineteenth July 1842.

Mr Charles Dickens presents his compliments to Mr Creed, and begs to reply to his enquiry. – Mr Dickens feared, from several slight circumstances which attracted his notice in the application, that it was a case of the nature described by Mr Creed. He has therefore taken care that his Mite should reach the wife;2 and not the husband.

  • 1. Richard Creed, Secretary, London & Birmingham Railway, 1833-46; later joint Secretary of the London & North Western Railway.
  • 2. CD’s accounts do not show an obvious bank payment relating to this letter; the use of "Mite" may suggest a small cash payment, rather than a cheque.
