  • 1. William Charles Macready (1793-1873; Dictionary of National Biography), the leading English actor of his generation. As actor-manager, notably at Covent Garden, 1837-9, he sought to raise the artistic and moral reputation of the stage, promoting Shakespeare and new dramatists, while driving prostitutes from public areas of the theatre. Retired 1851. His friendship with CD was unbroken from 1837.
