  • 1. William Hepworth Dixon (1821-79; Dictionary of National Biography), historian, journalist and traveller. Editor of the Athenaeum from 1853. He shared with CD an interest in prisons, and presented him with his John Howard (1849) and The London Prisons; with an Account of the More Distinguished Persons Who Have Been Confined in Them. To which is added, a Description of the Chief Provincial Prisons (1850; in fact Dec 1849). He inscribed the latter to CD with his "regards"; see J.H. Stonehouse (ed), Catalogue of the Library of Charles Dickens from Gadshill (London: Piccadilly Fountain Press, 1935), p. 39.
