  • 1. Charles Martin (1820-1906; Dictionary of National Biography), portrait painter: see Pilgrim Letters 3, p. 603 & nn. Martin had been commissioned to produce portraits of “Living Litterateurs”, the descriptions written by Peter Cunningham, Martin’s brother-in-law. CD’s portrait, published in the Pictorial Times, 20 Apr 43, was the second in the series: see Pilgrim Letters 3, p. 603 n.4; reproduced in the Dickensian IV (1908), 58. CD arranged to meet Martin on either 3 or 4 Dec (To Martin, 2 Dec 43, Pilgrim Letters 3, p. 603).
