- 1. Edwin Chadwick (1800-90; Dictionary of National Biography), social and sanitary reformer. Friend of Jeremy Bentham. Worked for improved conditions of employment and sanitation. Member of the Metropolitan Commission of Sewers 1848-9, tasked with inquiring into sanitation in London. Commissioner of the General Board of Health 1848-54. Founding member, along with CD, of Administrative Reform Association; see CD's speech of 27 June 1855 in The Speeches of CD, ed. K.J. Fielding (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1960), pp. 197-208.
