- 1. Richard Johns (1805-51), Lieutenant Royal Marines; stationed for many years on Ascension Island. An early friend of CD's, perhaps from his days in Chatham. Published poems and stories; his Calendar of Victory, a Record of British Valour and Conquest by Sea and Land (1855) was in the Gad's Hill library at CD's death. Contributed 10 pieces to Bentley's Miscellany, Mar 1837-Dec 1840, and "Alan Skeene" to The Pic Nic Papers.
