To WILLIAM SHOBERL,1 21 JULY 1841

MS Huntington Library.

Devonshire Terrace. | Twenty First July 1841.

Dear Sir.

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter in answer to mine of this morning;2 which is quite satisfactory. I need not, I am sure, point out the necessity of being very particular in respect of the form of advertisement in the weekly papers. As there has been ample time for correction, I am sure you will have attended to it.3

W. Shoberl Esquire

Faithfully Yours

 CHARLES DICKENS

  • 1. William Frederic Shoberl (1832-1878); assistant to the publisher Henry Colburn; see further Pilgrim Letters 2, p. 244n, where the year of his death is erroneously given as 1853 (the year in which his father Frederic died).
  • 2. Ambiguous; CD means “your letter received this morning” (see Pilgrim Letters  2, pp. 333, n.4, and 334 & n).
  • 3. Clearly referring to problems over the publication of The Pic Nic Papers: see Pilgrim Letters 2, p. 334n.
