- 1. Mark Lemon (1809-70; Dictionary of National Biography), founding editor of Punch. He and CD met in the early 1840s and became particularly close in the 1850s; see Pilgrim Letters 6, p.275n. He moved to 11 Gordon Street early in 1851 and became near neighbours with CD. Their children were friends; see Arthur A. Adrian, Mark Lemon, First Editor of Punch (Oxford: OUP, 1966, p. 114). He and CD fell out over CD’s separation from Catherine in 1858 and were reconciled in 1867.
